Dominican
Republic wins Pool A
TIJUANA, Mexico, July 7, 2010 – Dominican Republic overcame a
fiery Canada in four sets (17-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-23) to win
Pool A of NORCECA Women’s Junior Volleyball Championship. Both
teams recorded the same total of blocks and aces with 8 and 4
respectively.
Dominican Ana Yorkira Binet compiled 19 points to lead the
winning side while Marianne Fersola and Candida Arias
contributed 14 and 9. Lisa Barclay topped Canada with 15 points
and Jennifer Dixon added 10 tallies.
Brazilian Wagner Pacheco, who coaches Dominican Republic,
expressed mixed emotions after the match. “I am happy for the
victory but also sad because my team played bad,” he said. “The
girls were very nervous and you have to give credit to Canada
because they played almost perfect in the first set.”
“This is the fastest pace my team has ever played,” Canadian
Coach Derek Richels said. “In the first set we passed, served
and blocked well. Then we ran a little beat off steam in the
fourth set and couldn’t force a fifth set.”
